“Made in Italy” has always been synonymous with quality all over the world.
It is mainly fashion and design that proudly makes us raise the Italian flag high: they are the two specialities that have made Italy and Milan famous throughout the world.
Every year, our city hosts the most important events at world level related to these two sectors: Milan Fashion Week and Design Week.
Together we will make a journey to the discovery of the reasons why Milan is considered the world capital of fashion and design.
Fashion in Milan
The relationship between Milan and fashion is strong and indissoluble.
Milan is the city of fashion par excellence: here, every year, new trends are born, and some of the most important and coolest fashion events in the world are hosted.
One of the reasons that makes Milan one of the fashion capitals is certainly the presence of the famous quadrilatero della moda (‘quadrilateral of fashion’), perhaps the most famous “luxury district” in the world.
In this small area, right in the centre of Milan, there are showrooms, jewellers and boutiques of the most important Italian and international brands. The particular name, “quadrilateral”, derives from the fact that the area is bounded by four roads: Via Montenapoleone, Via Manzoni, Via della Spiga and Corso Venezia.
It is a must-go if you love shopping and fashion: walking along its fantastic streets you will breathe a magical atmosphere, made of lights, colours and scents ,and you will have the opportunity to admire up close the fantastic creations of the world’s most important brands, such as Armani, Fendi, Gucci, Valentino, and Bulgari.
In addition to the fantastic shops, you can visit the beautiful streets, where between Boutique and Atelier stand out many historic buildings, such as the Poldi Pezzoli, the Bagatti Valsecchi and Palazzo Morando.
Milan is also home to one of the most famous fashion events in the world, the Milano Fashion Week.
Events, parties, catwalks: this is how the occurrence can be summed up, organized to allow fashion houses to present their latest collections and to dictate the latest trends in terms of colours, styles, and types of wears. It is a regular date that has been animating the city, day and night, for over 50 years.
Women’s fashion week, the most important and eagerly awaited, is held twice a year: in September the spring/summer collections are unveiled and in February the fall/winter collections. Men’s fashion week is held in January and June.
During these seven days, many exclusive parties organized by fashion houses and magazines take place, in the coolest clubs and in the halls of the most important buildings. Obviously, to participate you need an invitation, which is usually delivered to models, journalists, influencers, fashion bloggers, and insiders. If you are curious to know the events and parties of the next Fashion Week, simply visit the website of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (National Chamber of Italian Fashion).
Milano Fashion Week is part of the “Big Four”, meaning is one of the 4 most important fashion events in the world. The other Fashion Weeks are held in Paris, London and New York.
Milan is also the perfect destination for those who want to study fashion and pursue a career in this field. There are several fashion schools where you can study and improve, such as the Marangoni (one of the most prestigious in the world), the Raffles and the Naba.
Design and Milan
Design and Milan have also been closely linked since the 1950s.
Every year, in April, the city of Milan hosts Design Week, which, together with Fashion Week, is the most awaited event in the city. During these seven days, designers, furniture makers, interior designers, and simple enthusiasts from all over the world, gather in the city.
Design week is an event not to be missed, a trendy date that involves the whole city, day and night.
The main events of the design week are two: the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair) and the Fuorisalone.
The Salone Internazionale del Mobile has been held since 1961. Initially, it took place in the area of the trade fair, but since 2005, it has been held at the Fiera di Milano (Rho), beautifully designed by the great architect Fuksas. This event is attended by furniture, household appliances, and furnishing materials manufacturers to present their new creations.
The Fuorisalone is not an event organized by organizations or institutions, but was born spontaneously during the eighties – the golden years of Milan – when some companies in the industry decided to give life to this initiative, perhaps the most important and best known in the industry. Unlike the Salone del Mobile, it is not a fair but a series of events taking place in different areas of the city: in the centre, in Zona Tortona, in Lambrate, in Brera, at the Triennale, and in the Garibaldi area.
Milan also hosts one of the most important design museums in the world: the Triennale Design Museum, an exhibition area exclusively dedicated to design. The aim of the museum is to “explain” the world of Italian design by presenting not only the works, but also the great figures and companies who express the best of “Made in Italy”.
If you have chosen to undertake a career in the world of design, in Milan you will find some of the most important design schools in the world: Istituto Marangoni, IED (European Design Institute), NABA and Politecnico di Milano, which was just re-elected the best university in Italy and among the best in the world.
